Welcome to the Permanent community! We are excited for you to join us on this path to preserving the stories and legacies that mean the most to you.

Self-Paced Support

For those who learn best by reading and doing, our support articles and how-to videos will help you learn the skills you need to get started. Permanent provides support documentation for features on Permanent, as well as getting started guides that walk you through accomplishing your goals. Our previously recorded webinars and how-to videos can also provide guidance for using the platform to preserve your legacy. We are always adding more content, so check back to continue your learning journey.

Guided Tour

If you prefer to have someone show you around a new platform and then explore on your own, our Member Orientation is for you. We hold Member Orientation once a month, generally on the second Wednesday of the month, at 12PM eastern. This one-hour webinar led by Permanent staff walks you through how to create an account, create your first archive, and provides you with some concrete next steps for getting started.

Learn with Others

Do you like to learn as part of a community? Our Legacy Lab program might be a great fit for you. Legacy Lab is a four-week guided archiving course and learning community to complete a beginner-friendly legacy project of your own design on Permanent.org. This four-week course provides guidance on digital archiving through instructional videos, daily emails with short tasks, and peer support. Participants will work towards creating an archive of their own by the end of the course.

Our knowledgeable staff have designed this program with you, our members, in mind. The Legacy Lab is beginner-friendly and offers a clear path to success for newcomers to digital archiving on Permanent. It is also appropriately paced and structured for more intermediate digital archivists who want to deepen their knowledge.

Permanent’s mission is to preserve the digital legacies of all people, and we recognize not everyone has had the opportunity to do that on their own terms. Legacy Lab is a pay-what-you-can, donation-based program in order to keep it accessible to all people and give more folks the opportunity to tell their stories.

Legacy Lab is offered twice a year, usually in March and October. Learn more about Legacy Lab and sign up here.
