Getting Started Checklist

Getting Started Checklist

Congratulations on taking the first steps towards preserving the legacy that's most important to you by creating an account and joining or creating your first archive! You are on your way towards ensuring that your most important materials are passed down to the next generation.

When you arrive in your first archive, you may notice a checklist in the bottom left corner. This checklist is here to help you get started on Permanent.org. We've made suggestions for next steps to get your account and your archive ready for preserving your legacy. In fact, you've already checked one item off the list by creating your first archive -- well done!

As you complete other tasks on the checklist, they will be checked off automatically for you. If you'd rather explore on your own, you can click the "Don't show me this again" button at the bottom of the checklist, and it will disappear forever. If you would like to hide the checklist, you can click the minus button in the top right corner of the checklist. To open the checklist again, click the icon in the lower left corner of your screen.

The checklist includes a number of steps that will help you get started on Permanent.org. You can find more information about how to complete those steps in this article. The steps on the checklist are as follows:

Create your first archive:
This item should already be checked off for you!

Redeem free storage:
You should have received an email with a code to redeem your free storage, on us. For help with redeeming that code, you can check out this support article. If you aren't sure about your gift code, or you never received an email, reach out to us at support@permanent.org and we can assist you.

Assign a Legacy Contact:
An important part of ensuring that your legacy is preserved is deciding how, when, and to whom you pass it down. On Permanent, we've created Legacy Planning to help you with these questions. The first step to creating a Legacy Plan on Permanent is to assign a Legacy Contact. Your Legacy Contact is the person responsible for reaching out to Permanent in the event of your death or incapacitation so we can enact your Legacy Plan. You can learn more about how to assign a Legacy Contact here.

Assign an Archive Steward:
The next step to create a Legacy Plan on Permanent is to assign an Archive Steward for your archive. The Archive Steward will take over ownership of your archive on Permanent in the event of your death or incapacitation. You can learn more about how to assign an Archive Steward here.

Update Archive Profile:
Your Archive Profile is an important part of your archive because it tells the story of your materials and why they're important to you. In the Archive Profile, you can write an overview of what people can find in your archive or provide a biography or summary about the person, group, or organization your archive is about. You can learn more about your Archive Profile here.

Upload first file:
An important part of getting started on Permanent is beginning to upload the files that represent your legacy. Choose one (or more!) files to upload for preservation in your archive. You can start with whatever is on your computer already. We suggest your favorite photo, so you can set it as your profile photo in your Archive Profile. You can learn more about how to upload to your archive here.

Publish your archive:
The last step you can take to get started on Permanent is to share your legacy with the world. This ensures that your legacy is accessible to learners in future generations to discover. You can learn more about publishing on Permanent in this article. If you would rather not publish your materials for the world to see, that's okay! When you are finished with the checklist, you can click the "Don't show me this again" button at the bottom of the checklist to dismiss it forever.
